From those first humble beginnings, the Orchestra has grown into a family of 40+ members, residents of Lake, Summit, Park, Freemont and Chaffee Counties, and ranging in age from 14 to 85. Our members include people from a variety of professions, with all levels of education and musical experience. The orchestra has been led by six different conductors, acquiring valuable knowledge, skills and experience from each of them. Through generous donations from ever-growing audiences and from members themselves, the group now has several pieces of equipment, and is building a moderate library of musical compositions.

As it begins its third decade, the Alpine Orchestra continues to strive for excellence in fulfilling its purpose of sharing the enjoyment of music with the community, and expanding opportunities for talented young musicians.
We have a great time at rehearsals and concerts, and take our music and practicing seriously, so come and have some fun!

The Maestro

The maestro of Alpine Orchestra is Mrs. Beth Steele, who is an experienced musician and conductor. She received her Bachelor of Music (trumpet) degree and Master of Music (wind conducting) degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL.

Mrs. Steele has performed on trumpet playing with numerous groups, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, New Sousa Band, Virginia Symphony, and the British Imperial Military Band. She served a career in the US Army as a conductor, where her duties included: Associate Director, US Army Band , Washington, DC; Commander & Conductor, Continental Army Band, Hampton, VA; Commandant, Army School of Music, Virginia Beach, VA; Conductor, US Army Field Band and Soldier’s Chorus, Washington, DC; and and most recently as the Commander of the US Army Europe Band & Chorus in Heidelberg, Germany.

While in Europe, Beth developed enduring partnerships with European musicians and was awarded the German government’s highest peacetime award of the “Silver Cross of Honor,” a first for an American Director of Music. She also led the Band & Chorus in historic performances in Moscow’s Red Square, for Her Majesty the Queen in London, and first-ever combined concerts with the National Serbian Defense Orchestra.

> Mrs. Steele retired from the US Army as Lt. Col. (Ret.) and resides in Summit County with her husband Mike, also a retired Army musician (Sergeant Major). In addition to performing on trumpet, they are both ski instructors at Breckenridge Ski Resort.
